The Gardendale Lady Rockets entered AHSAA North Regional play today, dropping a hard fought first game to Athens 1-0. Moving to the losers bracket, the Lady Rockets rebounded in a must win, downing Minor 24-0, in 3 innings, to keep their hopes alive of making the state tournament.
Gardendale will have to keep winning and finish in 2nd place to make state. They resume play in the morning against Cullman at 9am.
Sophie Gant got the start for Gardendale against Minor and went 2 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out 4. Reagan Howard came in for an inning to close it out for the Lady Rockets.
The offense cranked out 17 hits, with Howard, Kenley Vaughn, Kara Jasper, Catey Thomas and Gant all contributing a hit for the Lady Rockets. Miya Covington, Lillie Piersol, Natalie Snow, Angela Bradley and Allie Busbee all had multiple hits. Busbee led the way for Gardendale, going 3 for 3 with 6 RBIs.
Also in North Regional play, Mortimer Jordan put themselves in the driver seat to make the state tournament by winning both of their games today. The Blue Devils beat Hazel Green 4-3 in game one and Cullman 11-7 in game 2.
MJHS plays Athens tomorrow at 1:45pm.
