Local Meals on Wheels Volunteers Needed at Gardendale Senior Center

The Gardendale Senior Center participates in the United Way program Meals on Wheels. While food is delivered to the senior center 5 days each week, Peggy Burgess, Senior Center Director, says “packing must be done quickly to retain the proper temperature. Our employees work furiously every morning as soon as the food is delivered to the kitchen door.”

Burgess says there is a great need in the community for the program as many are elderly or disabled. Currently, 24 senior citizens are being served locally by the Gardendale Senior Center volunteers. Burgess emphasizes that the need is great for volunteer drivers and “the routes usually take about an hour to complete.”

It’s not just the meals. Burgess says the recipients “look forward to receiving the meals and the contact with a smiling face.”

To volunteer your time, you may contact the volunteer coordinator, Maleia Owen at 205-458-2056.
