We have a rich history in our country, in towns large and small, of naming parks, monuments, musuems, libraries, buildings and roadways after folks who played an important role in getting them built and established.
It’s a way to honor their contribution.
For the last 20 years, no person has made a more lasting and impactful contribution to the Gardendale Senior Center than Peggy Burgess. She was hired as its first director before the building was even finished.
Mrs. Burgess has been a tireless champion for seniors in this area and, at a time many enjoy retirement, she has devoted her 60’s, 70’s and 80’s to make the Gardendale Senior Center one of the most well run and respected centers in the county and state.
The job carries few accolades.
I can’t think of a better way to honor her tireless commitment and important contribution than for Gardendale’s Mayor and City Council to rename the center as the Peggy Burgess Senior Center.
Doing so would be a fitting honor on what she has meant to Gardendale, the greater community and the seniors for the last 20 years.
