Reducing the Appearance of Smile Lines

Smile lines are also referred to as nasolabial folds, they are the wrinkles that extend from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth. As we age, they become more prominent because the skin loses elasticity and collagen. Some of my patients are very self-conscious about the area and commonly ask for fillers to reduce the appearance of smile lines. Fillers plump up the skin and reduce the depth of the creases giving the face a more refreshed and youthful appearance.

During consultations, patients frequently inquire about the number of syringes they may require for treatment. I use a chart in my practice to determine the level of loss, ranging from early to severe, which gives patients an idea of what to expect. For example, if a patient has severe creases in the nasolabial folds, one syringe on each side can improve the appearance, but it will not eliminate them.

On average I use a total of two to three syringes of different fillers with large and small molecules to give patients a good plump and achieve a natural looking result. It is essential to keep in mind that fillers are a safe and reversible alternative to surgery and can last for up to a year.
